The Title That Never Got Celebrated at the Bernabeu

It’s been a refreshing mini-break from football over this international break. But here we are.

Real Madrid will return to the Santiago Bernabeu for the first time in more than a year. This tantalizing, self-critiquing, demanding, merciless ground is everything for Real Madrid fans who get the privilege of experiencing it from inside the ground and those who follow the game from thousands of miles away, in front of digital screens.

Real Madrid never got to celebrate their 34th LaLiga title in front of their fans. In the meantime, another team became LaLiga Champions.

The 2019-20 LaLiga title was emblematic, reassuring that Real Madrid always comes back. Having said goodbye to their greatest ever goalscorer, changing managers three times in the previous season, Real Madrid did come back, becoming the best defence in all of Europe, deterring from their famous offensive football. Zinedine Zidane made that happen. The team’s 2nd top scorer and Captain supreme – Sergio Ramos made that happen. Due to Raphael Varane’s inhuman defensive awareness and Sergio’s offensive productivity, the captain never got the credit for the one-of-a-kind defensive solidity he provided that season.

Zinedine Zidane and Sergio Ramos would struggle hard to isolate a singular crown jewel in their extraterrestrial careers. There’s just too much to choose from. But LaLiga 2019-20 will be there, right among the top ones.

Real Madrid returns home in four days, without their guardian angels.
